B1 - The Taming of the Shrew - Blog # 5

Please respond to the prompts below.  Use quotes when stipulated.

1.  Describe the bet that is made.  Use a quote as support.

2.  Who wins?  Were you surprised?

3.  Is the outcome ironic?  Yes or no?

4.  When we think back about disguises or "facades," how might the conclusion of this play reinforce that concept?

5.  What do you think?  Was Kate tamed?  Was she just "behaving" for the time being?

6.  How might Petruchio be better suited for Bianca and Lucentio for Kate?  Or is this simply crazy talk?

Due: Monday, 11.21

  1. 1. Petruchio made a bet with Lucentio and Hortensio over which wife was the most loyal, by sending them away, and having a servant call for them, and see if they would come back to their husbands. "Well, I say no. And therefore, for assurance, / Let’s each one send unto his wife; / And he whose wife is most obedient / To come at first when he doth send for her,/ Shall win the wager which we will propose." (5.2.54).

    2. When Biondello requests for Hortensio's wife and Bianca to come, they refuse. When Grumio requests Kate to come, she does. Personally, I don't really find this bet a very good way of demonstrating how loyal the three wives are, but as far as the bet goes, Kate wins. I didn't think that Kate would win, mainly because it seems to obvious that she would. I guess that means I was thinking a bit too much about the outcome.

    3. I don't really find the outcome ironic, because it's expected that Kate turns out to be the better wife, since she was the shrew being tamed. Even the title sort of gives the ending away.

    4. The conclusion is that Kate really is tamed, and she is in fact a well behaved, independent woman. This reinforces the statement that we had before about Kate, that her bad and "curst" behavior was just a result of how she was treated as being inferior to Bianca, and she felt forced to act this way. Once she started acting like a shrew, it became too late for her to change herself, either that or it was too difficult. It would be like breaking a bad habit you had for your whole life.

    5. Honestly, I think she was "tame" all along, it's just that she was forced to keep up a facade. Marrying Petruchio gave her a chance to change herself. Maybe even moving out of the house would have done the trick alone. Being in the same environment where she was treated in an inferior way certainly wouldn't speed up the process of breaking her facade.

    6. It comes back to that discussion we had earlier, about what makes a good relationship, as far as personality goes. We concluded that there were 2 types of relationships: a relationship in which the personality of the partners were the same, and a relationship in which their personalities were the complete opposite. Kate and Petruchio, at least at first, had the same personality. This sort of made them "click". The same goes for Lucentio and Bianca. However, if Petruchio went with Bianca, and Lucentio with Kate, it would be like the second type of relationship I mentioned, where both partners had 2 completely different personalities. Bianca, who was considered fair and sweet, had an opposite personality to Petruchio, who was loud and obnoxious. Kate, who was curst and independent, had a different personality to Lucentio, who had practically the same personality as Bianca. I have no knowledge of any of these two types of relationships, but if it is true that opposite personalities are attracted to each other, then it would be possible. It reminds me of the sayings "a negative and a negative makes a positive", or "two opposites always attract".

  2. 1. Petruchio makes a bet with Hortensio and Lucentio over whose wife was the most tame and obedient. Petruchio proposes that they each wager one hundred crowns that their wives will come when called upon, “Let’s each one send unto his wife, and he whose wife is most obedient, to come at first when he doth send for her, shall win the wager” (5.2.65)
    2. Petruchio ends up winning the bet because while Bianca and Hortensio’s wife refuse to come when called upon by their husbands, Kate promptly comes to Petruchio when he sends Grumio for her. I wasn’t really surprised that Kate did come due to Petruchio’s confidence that she would. However, I was more surprised that Lucentio’s and Hortensio’s wives refused; because Bianca and Hortensio’s wife are seen as much more tame and seem to have more passive personalities, I would have expected them to have no reason to refuse, yet they did so I suppose that was a bit surprising.
    3. I suppose it is ironic since Kate, the most disobedient of them all, ends up being the most obedient wife to her rouge husband. However, it’s not surprising given that the title of the play is The Taming of the Shrew.
    4. The taming of Kate reinforces the concept of facades due to the fact that she slid into the role of an obedient, loyal wife with such ease after having been the most disobedient rouge of them all. She began to disguise her soft-hearted feminine side with a hard shell constructed from the jealousy she had about her sister’s beauty and charm, and as her shell became thicker and thicker her calmer side became completely concealed by her new façade.
    5. I do not believe Kate has been tamed; her spunk that was present in the first scene in which she was introduced is still very much intact as we see in her lecture to Lucentio and Hortensio’s wives in the last scene. The initial energy that she had is very much still present; however she seems to have realized how her actions affect others through observation of her husband’s, therefore causing her to apply more tact to her arguments and placing them appropriately. In her lecture in act V scene II, Kate speaks of how grateful the wives should be of their hardworking husbands, and recognizes their support and continues to extrapolate how grateful they should all be that they have such caring, supportive husbands.
    6. I believe a person can learn an incredible amount from any other being, either though observation of their better qualities and follow in their deeds, or, notice their lesser qualities and stray from mimicking such habits. Kate saw Petruchio’s outlandish behavior and decided to take another look at her own actions. Had she been with Luciento instead, she may have admired his gentle characteristics and followed in his method, who knows. But the wellness of fit when it comes to relationships cannot be determined simply though personality characteristics. It is completely possible for two people with few things in common to be just as content with one another as another couple with most everything in common.

  3. 1The bet between Petruchio, Lucentio, and Hortensio was to test which of their wives will obedient, therefore what they did was they made their wives go somewhere else, and asked a servant to bring them back to Petruchio, Lucentio, and Hortensio. Basically what is showed was how well behaved and obedient they are towards their husbands. “Let’s each one send unto his wife; And he whose wife is most obedient To come at first when he doth send for her” (5.2.65-69).

2.As a result, Katherine wins, I was pretty surprised, since I was expecting Bianca to appear faster than Kate. It seems like Katherine’s power has been taken away from Petruchio completely, and she acts like she is tamed.

3.As much as I was surprised, I don’t think it was ironic. To me, Katherine’s behavior improved alot, while we see the real side of Bianca. Katherine seems like a better wife than Bianca at the moment.
    4. The disguises or the “facades” expresses how Kate was tamed within the whole play. But also how her transformation changed tremendously, from a disobedient and uncontrollable woman, to a tamed, affectionate wife.
    5. I think Kate is tamed. Her completely soft side gradually revealed, and she is an independent but a loving character. However, I do think she will always have the confidence and courage to express her feelings, and say whatever she wants to. She became a lot more obedient and controllable compared to the first time she was introduced in the play.

6.Kate and Petruchio seems like a perfect couple to me, having unique personalities, both agressive and wild (in some ways) what makes them have good chemistry is that they are carefree to each other. Often times when in a relationship, if both of them are not open to each other, everything seems more secretive, and as you reveal a lot of yourself, it will be a surprise. Generally, you can’t become closer to each other. I just don’t think Lucentio and Kate will work out because they do not have anything in common. Petruchio and Kate on the other hand have more in common, and that is what makes their relationship work.

  4. 1.) The bet was between Petruchio, Hortensio, and Lucentio to see which wife will be the most obedient and come to them. Each of their servants fetch the wife and whoever’s wife comes back wins the prize money.
“Let’s each one send unto his wife,/
And he whose wife is most obedient,/
To come at first when he doth send for her,/
Shall win the wager which we will propose.” (5.2.66-68)
2.) Petruchio wins and I was not really that surprised because books tend to be like that, to have an unexpected ending. The book is also called The Taming of The Shrew, so obviously, Petruchio tames the shrew or else the title and story will kind of have a pointless ending.
3.) Yes, the outcome is ironic because Kate is suppose to be no obedient, a shrew. Also, everyone thinks that Petruchio is going to lose and Kate wouldn’t be obedient at all, but it turns out that she is.
4.) The ending reinforces the facades concept because Kate being a shrew was kind of a disguise. I don’t think she actually meant to be a shrew, she was just keeping her image, so it was her façade and in reality she is a considerate, obedient wife.
5.) I think Kate tamed because she made a magnificent speech at the ending and if she really wasn’t tamed she wouldn’t be able to come up with such an inspiring speech. However, I wouldn’t use tamed, but rather expressed her true self in the end. I think that after marrying Petruchio she gave up her façade, and returned the person that she really was or wanted to be.
6.) I think the couples match each other. I think Petruchio’s quick wittiness entertains Kate and gives her a challenge. Also, because Petruchio has a cocky attitude that refuses to let Kate reject him, it amazes Kate that he is willing to put up with her, which Lucentio wouldn’t be able to do. I think Lucentio is gentler, which matches Bianca. Lucentio went to study, but instead he fell in love and devoted himself to get Bianca, which is sweet, which matches more for Bianca.

  5. 1. As the men were talking about who has a shrew as their wife. Petrucio says this "Let’s each one send unto his wife;/And he whose wife is most obedient/To come at first when he doth send for her,/Shall win the wager which we will propose" ( Act 5 Scene 2 lines 67-70). In order to point out that kate was not the shrew, he suggested a bet between, himself, Hortensio and Lucentio. They would each order their servant to call their mistresses and the one whose wife obey their order shall win.

    2. Petrucio won. I wouldn't say i was surprised , since from previous acts, the image that kate had changed was pretty obvious. Petrucio was able to tame the shrew indeed. However, I did expect Bianca to show up, because of the image people give her. This proves that Bianca is not all sweet, and gentle like everybody says.

    3. I don't think the result was ironic, it may have been surprising that Katherine was the one that showed up, but I do think that Katherine really did change from the inside and wasn't just putting an act in front of Petrucio.

    4. I think you can say that as a conclusion, everybody puts on disguises whether its using actual props or from the inside, people are not who you think they are. Kate for example, who would ever have thought she would actually be tamed. Maybe it was the image that people gave her that made it hard for her to show her true self. Bianca as well, was she really the sweet and gentle girl everybody thought she was? When the men were doing their bet you cans see that she wasn't really that sweet and gentle, it was just because she had a sister like kate which in contrast made her look like an angel.

    5. To be honest I'm not so sure. At the point where the story ends, I do think she is tamed and is willing to obey from deep inside, but as time goes, there is a possibility that she might turn back. For instance, if she realizes that Petrucio is not really that much of a threat she might just become the devil she was again.

    6. I think it wouldn't make sense. It think two people are attracted to each other because they have the same qualities. Petrucio and Kate have the same wild and outrageous personality, while lucent and Bianca had a rather calm one. These two were perfect match, I wouldn't think Lucentio and Kate nor Bianca and Petrucio would have. Or else, Bianca wouldn't have been the one person Lucentio was so attracted to, and Kate wouldn't be the person Petrucio had to marry and tame.

  6. 1. It was a bet made by Petruchio, Hortensio and Lucentio, on which wife is the most tamed. The wives will be sent away, and who will obediently come back, was the game. Petruchio has faith in his wife, and he raises the bid. “Twenty crowns? I’ll Venture so much of my hawk and hound, but twenty times so much upon my wife” (5.2.73).
    2. The tamed shrew wins the race; this did not even make me budge with revelation. It was pretty obvious, and it wouldn’t be a happy ending, if the shrew wasn’t tamed after all… Although would have been funny to see that ending though… Kate won.
    3. Kind of… The whole story was based on the adventures of making a shrew tamed… Wouldn’t have been normal to neglect that idea, so that part isn’t as ironic. But the fact that the Bianca who wasn’t tamed, was more of a shrew then Kate.
    4. Although Kate had that act where she was abusive, and untamed. She then became a woman with an independent heart, with manners. Bianca and Kate switch sides, both revealing there inner real personalities. Which reflects back to the idea, that Kate was probably not a bad person after all. Never judge a book by its cover.
    5. As we all know now, you can never develop a soft heart unless you were born with one. In this case, Kate developed a hard shell around her heart that ruled her over the years, and it was slowly killing Kate’s real personality. In the end, this shell broke with the power of Petruchio breaking it down. She still has the will and the power to stand up for what she believes in, while still staying nice and cool. Well… this is what I think about how Kate is acting, I doubt you can act for your whole life, and I doubt that Kate can keep up with it. Without her noticing she is slowly becoming obedient.
    6. Negative and positive match like a magnet. Kate and Petruchio have the same elements, but Petruchio has the will power to change; if Kate will benefit from it. Vice versa, they both give each other the challenge, which gives them both to be entertained. Which in all gives the best results; they will probably not get bored of each other. If Petruchio dated Bianca, he would probably be bored, and vise versa for the other couple. So in the end Petruchio and Kate should be the best choice.
