4. Gremio introduces Lucentio as a man named "Cambio", who was to be a young scholar.
5. Petruchio is to receive twenty thousand crowns. Personally, I didn't quite understand what Baptista meant by "the one half of my hands".
6. There's some obvious antithesis when Petruchio says "Then I'll commend her volubility / And say she uttereth piercing eloquence". This is in relation to what Petruchio would do if Kate does not speak.
7. "For dainties are all cates", in relation to her name (metaphor / pun).
"Hearing thy mildness praised in every town", when the past characters have said she is infamous for her bad tongue (antithesis / dramatic irony).
"And bonny Kate, and sometimes Kate the ourst", (antithesis / dramatic irony).
8. "What, with my tongue in your tail? / Nay, come again, good Kate, I am a gentleman".
ahem...
"What, with my face in your pants? / Come now, I'm too polite"

ReplyDelete2.) Petruchio introduces Hortensio to Baptista to instruct his daughters. Petruchio says that Hortensio, pseudonymed Litio, is from Mantua.
3.) Katherine strongly hates Bianca as Bianca receives all the attention from their father and men, "if you affect him, sister [Katherine], here I sweat I'll plead for you myself but you shall have him. As shown, Bianca tries to make compromises to Katherine, but Katherine just rejects her pleas. Katherine is jealous of how nicely her father treats Bianca and how rudely he treats Katherine and accusing him of talking badly of Katherine.
4.) Gremio introduces Lucentio to Baptista to instruct his daughters. He uses the pseudonym Cambio to hide Lucentio's identity.
5.) Petruchio receives twenty thousand crowns and after Baptista dies, one half of his lands. However, if Petruchio dies before Katherine, then Katherine will receive all Petruchio's land and property. Contracts have to be created to ensure the circumstances are kept.
6.) "If she do bid me pack I'll giver her thanks
As though she bid me stay by her a week.
If she deny to wed I'll crave the day
When I shall ask the banns, and when be married."
If Katherine says that she does not want to be with Petruchio,
Then I'll act as if she asked me to be with her for a week.
If Katherine denies marriage
Then I will act as if we are going to et married and marry.
7.) "And bonny Kate, and sometimes Kate the ourst. But Kate, the prettiest Kate in Christendom," - verbal irony
"For dainties are all cates, and therefore, Kate" - malapropism
"Thy virtues spoke of, and thy beauty sounded, Yet not so deeply as to thee belongs," - hyperbole
8.) Baptista chooses Lucentio to marry Bianca.
9.) "Who knows not where a wasp does wear his sting? In his tail. "
Who does not know where a wasp has its stinger? It's on his tail.
10.) I like Petruchio the most because he is cunning. Even though Katherine continually bashes him he continues to act like they are a loving couple, which is very funny and skillful on his part to keep his pride up. I dislike Baptista the most because he is favoring Bianca over Katherine. I don't think Katherine would be as shrewd if Baptista gave them equal attention and love. He could care less about Katherine which I think is rude and he shouldn't focus all his attention on Bianca, no matter how much attention she receives.
1. Petruchio is from Verona, Italy. He moves to Padua, hoping he can marry someone rich.
ReplyDelete2. Petruchio and Hortensio were disguised as musicians. Petruchio introduces Hortensio who is disguised as a teacher. He is very clever, and is willing to teach the sisters music, mathematics, and science, which he is good at. Lithio is from Mantua, and Lithio is Hortensio’s fake name.
3. “Her silence flouts me, and I’ll be revenged” (Shakespeare 76). Katherine is quite jealous of how all the suitor comes for Bianca and not for herself. What drives her crazy is the fact that his father is all interested for Bianca and not herself. In my opinion, Bianca does not realize how much she is offending Kate, that is why Kate decided to tie Bianca up and ask her which of the suitors are the favorite. They do seem to have a lot of tension between each other, especially for Kate, while Bianca seems like she does not know anything.
4. Gremio introduced Lucentio as a school teacher to Baptista. His name is Cambio, who is very good at Greek, Latin, and other languages, as well as math and music.
5. Petruchio will receive half of Batpista’s land, and two thousand crowns. Bianca will only receive something only if Petruchio passed away earlier than Bianca, in that case she will receive all of Petruchio’s land and the rent of the property he owns.
6. “Say that she rail ; why then I’ll tell her plain she sings as sweetly as a nightingale” What that meant was that if she complains, he will lie and says that she sings sweetly. In my opinion Kate wouldn’t complain as much. But overall lines 170-180 seem to be an antithesis.
7.““Moved,” in good time. Let him that moved you hither” (pun)

Kate of Kate Hall, my super-dainty Kate—
For dainties are all Kates—” (antithesis)
8. Lucentio was chosen as Bianca’s husband.
9. “What, with my tongue in your tail? Nay, come again,
Good Kate. I am a gentleman”
What, with my tongue in your tail? No, come again, I’m gentleman.
10. I personally like Katherine the best, most definitely because of her harsh personality and the way she interacts with people. I think people wouldn’t know what it was like being her, when you were behind the shadow of your pretty sister, of course she’ll feel jealousy. It is a pretty natural thing, since she is the elder sister, and she doesn’t want be feel lame compared to her younger sister. Generally, I really feel sorry for how she is treated and how she is looked upon. I don’t like Baptista, just because I really feel sorry for Katherine, and he doesn’t treat her daughters right. And Katherine might have been a bit different if Baptista showed more care for her.
1. Petruchio is from Verona, Italy. He came to Padua after his father Antonio's death hoping to marry a rich wife, no matter how ugly, old or a shrew the woman may be.
ReplyDelete2. Petruchio introduces Hortencio who uses the pseudonym of Litio. Petruchio itroduces Hortencio(Litio) as an expert in music an mathematics and is willing to offer him as a gift, a teacher to Baptista's beautiful daughter.

And, for your love to her, lead apes in hell.
Talk not to me. I will go sit and weep
Till I can find occasion of revenge." (Shakespeare Act2 Scene1 2). This quote is what Katherine says after being scolded by her father. She obviously is bouth jealous and envious of her sister Bianca, who recieves all the love and attention especially from their father. she feels that she is nothing compared to what Bianca mean to her father, and therefore she hates Bianca enough to do cruel things to her.
4. Gremio introduces Lucentio who is posing as Cambio a scholar who is expert in languages. Gremio offers him to Baptista also as a teacher for Baptista's daughter.

As though she bid me stay by her a week.
If she deny to wed, I’ll crave the day
When I shall ask the banns and when be marrièd" (Shakespeare Act 2 Scene 1 8).
If she orders me to go, I will thank her as if she asked me to stay for a week. If she refuses my proposal, I will tell her how much im looking forward to our wedding day.
7."Hearing thy mildness praised in every town,
Thy virtues spoke of, and thy beauty sounded" - Verbal Irony
"But Kate, the prettiest Kate in Christendom" - Bombast

9.
"No cock of mine.you crow too like a craven"
Your cock is not for me. It has no fighting spirit.
10. I like Katherine the best. She may be jealous, and mean and a shrew during the time. But viewing her character from our time, she seems to ba independent young woman, a strong woman who does what she believes in and has attitude. Her straight forward personality is what I like about her too. On the contrary though, I don't like Bianca that much yet so far as the play goes. I feel that she is a "daddy's little girl" all nice, cute , and graceful. Hoever, when she were to face a problem herself she won't be as strightforward as her sister because she is so overprotected by her father. Overall,I just don't like her because she gets all the attention, and Katherine nothing at all. Born in the same roof, but treated so differently, if I were Katherine, I don't think I would have been able to put up with her sister and father for so long, making the fact that Bianca can't marry was because her attitude.
B1 Ap Literature Catherine
1) Petruchio is from northern Italy, Verona.
ReplyDelete2) Petruchio introduces Hortensio, to the father to get the job to instruct his daughters. With his skills he was able to express his ability to teach. Which lead him to offer to teach math, science and music to the two daughters. They fake their names, and Lithio is from Mantua, which is also a fake name for Hortensio.
3) As you can see with the words from Katherine, she is mistreated, and very strong willed compared to Bianca. Bianca tends to just follow orders like a toy poodle. Like most men want their woman to only follow their orders, this is an ideal factor at that time. Woman who are beautiful, and obeys every command. Instead of acting like a toy poodle, Katherine hisses, and acts like a snake in hostile. These are two are one the opposite side of each other. Katherine seems to not like how Bianca kisses up to people (Father), and not act independent. “Kate. A pretty peat! It is best/ Put finger in the eye, an she knew why” (Shakespeare 29). “Bianca. Sister, content you in my discontent. /Sir, to your pleasure humbly I subscribe. / my books and instruments shall be my company,/ On them to look and practice by myself” (Shakespeare 30).
4) Gremio calls him Cambio.
5) Both receive the same risk factors. If Petruchio dies, he will loose everything to Katherine, but he will still gain twenty thousand crowns while he is alive.
6) “Say that she frowns, I’ll say she looks clear” Even if she looks sad, she would still look nice. “As morning roses newly washed with dew” As something so beautiful, yet thorny can be all washed up by tears. (or rain…)
7) Kate of Kate-hall (Pun)
Take this of me (Malapropism)
Hearing thy mildness praised in every town (Verbal Irony)
8) Lucentio can marry Bianca.
9) “What, with my tongue in your tail? Nay, come again, good Kate I am a Gentleman”
What, my head in your skirt? No, come again, be good Kate, I am a gentleman.
Tongue= head Tail=Buttocks area.
10) As much as I hate poodles, I hate Bianca. She feels weak, and not really appealing to me. Compared to the sharp tongue Katherine, she seems to fit my likings. She’s funny, in a way, but at the same time very defensive. Katherine is something I look forward to see, how she may change with in the story, or would she develop her personality even further.
1. Petruchio moved to Padua from Verona, Italy.
ReplyDelete2. Petruchio introduces Hortensio, who uses the pseudonym Litio, to Baptista as a tutor for his daughters in the art of music and mathematics.
3. Due to Bianca’s popularity amongst the suitors and her ignorance to how the situation is causing her sister to be jealous and hurt has made Kate upset enough to strike her own sister (Shakespeare 47). Kate calls Bianca a “Minion” saying to her “thou liest”, belittling her, and calling her a liar (Shakespeare 47). It seems that Kate is sick of hearing all the ruckus about which fine suitor will finally win Bianca and demands that she choose while going so far as to have tied her sister up until she chooses.
4. Gremio introduces Lucentio, who uses the pseudonym Cambio, to Baptista to instruct his daughters in Latin.
5. The dowry from Baptista that has been promised to Petruchio upon marrying Kate is twenty thousand crowns, half Baptista’s lands. However, this is all only so long as Baptista dies prior to Kate’s or Petruchio’s death and if Petruchio’s death precedes Kate’s then Kate shall be the one to receive Baptista’s promised dowry.
6. “Say that she frown, I’ll say she looks as clear
As morning roses newly washed with dew” (Shakespeare 53).
Petruchio speaks of how he will court his wife-to-be, how if she frowns, or shows discontent in her face that may be unattractive, he will tell her otherwise and say that she looks as beautiful as roses in the morning with little drops of water on their velvety petals.
7. Petruchio uses verbal irony when describing Kate and making her name “cute” by calling her “Bonny Kate and sometimes Kate the ourst”. He also exaggerates her beauty by using a hyperbole, saying she is “the prettiest Kate in Christendom”. Lastly, he uses malapropism when saying “cate” in “For dainties are cates, and therefore, Kate” saying that she is a delicacy.
8. Baptista chooses Lucentio to have Bianca’s hand in marriage because he offers the better dowry, unless of course he is unable to receive the dowry from his father in which case the runner up gets Bianca’s hand.
9. Petruchio says to Kate “What, with my tongue in your tail”, when speaking of how she is like a wasp and him being the one to remove her “stinger” (Shakespeare 55). In this scenario, Kate’s tail is a reference to her genitals and Petruchio talks about his tongue being in that area of her body, making their animal metaphor into a sexual scenario which ends up with Kate slapping him.
10. I think I like Kate the most at the end of Act II because we gain so much more understanding of her reasons as to why she is so sharp tongued. We see how she has to watch numerous suitors go dopy over her ignorant and carefree sister all the while being called a shrew. And on top of that, her father never stops to listen to Kate’s feelings but rather works to find them husbands that will provide material goods for them.
